Scavenger Hunt Through Luxembourg Gardens

We spent a somewhat rainy afternoon at Luxembourg Gardens.  To make it more interesting for the kids we had them go on a scavenger hunt through the gardens.  A great way to see the gardens and learn a few historical facts.

 "Le Marchand De Masques"
The only mask that he is holding in his left hand is the face of the famous French author, Victor Hugo, the author of The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Les Mis.  The masks surrounding the base of the statue are some of France's most famous artists, musicians, and writers.

Mary Stuart
(Mary Queen of Scots)

There are so many statues of queens, Mary was a little more difficult to find.   We have been trying to keep track of the Elizabeths and Marys in our European History.  Mary Stuart had already served as queen of two nations- Scotland and France and was now looking to rule over England.   Queen Elizabeth was ruling over England at the time and living in constant fear of plots to overthrow and assassinate her.  Ultimately,  Elizabeth imprisoned Mary and signed Mary's death warrant for her her plotting to overtake he throne and raising Catholic support.

Statue of Liberty
There were actually 3 Statues of Liberty made.  the most famous one is in New York.  There was also a  proto-type made and that stands near the Eiffel Tower.  The third one is a gift that the United States gave back to the French and it stands in the Luxembourg Gardens.

La Bocca Della Verita
(The Mouth of Truth)
Legend has it that if you have lied and you put your hand in the "mouth of truth" then the mouth would bite off your hand.

Here is Chelsea taking her chances with some pretty tough questions.

Of course, we had to stop in and get some famous hot chocolate.
