Robben Island- Nelson Mandela

Steve and I took a trip to Robben Island where Nelson Mandela spent 18 of his 27 years in prison.  It is now a monument that recognizes the apartheid heroes.

Nelson Mandela, along with fellow prisoners, was forced to do hard labor in the quarry.

We learned that prisoners were forced to sleep on the floor with a light blanket.  There is no glass in the windows to protect the prisoners from rain or cold.  Some of the prisoners had their own small cells with a bucket for a toilet.

Our tour guide spent time on Robben Island.  Found him extraordinary that he could describe the atrocities he endured and yet be so filled with hope for himself, South Africa, and the world.

We enjoyed reading the book Good Morning, Mr. Mandela by Zelda la Grange and watching PBS's The Long Walk of Nelson Mandela to better understand the great Nelson Mandela.
